To be familiar with CISCO router commands, Take a few minutes to read thisse article which is very helpful when you prepare yourself for the Cisco CCNA exam.
  1. User EXEC Mode: This mode permits the administrator to use monitoring commands but limited. It is impossible to configure from this mode. On this mode, the command prompt is "router>"
  2. Privileged EXEC Mode: This mode permits the administrator to equip the device commands, most of which are for configuration and management, Moreover, it can be password protected. It only permits authorized users to start up the device at this "full-access" level. This mode is also called “enable mode” because the source is from the enable command. On this mode, the command prompt is "router#". “Configure terminal” must be typed to configure any device from the EXEC mode.

Router Memory Types

There are four memory types of Cisco Routers:

  • ROM:  POST script of the router is found in ROM. The POST software (Power On Self Test) is used once you start up performing by initially checking the device of the hardware. This contains a mini internet operating system that is used to retrieve password in case forgotten
  • RAM: This is the place where you can find the configuration runs. After booting up the device, The RAM automatically stores the IOS software. Another function of RAM is to hold the tables of routing and parameters of networking at the time the operation or performance is on going. While the router is being configured, it actually changes the running-configuration in RAM.
  • NVRAM: Upon saving the running-configuration, NVRAM loads the command for example "write" that serves as startup-configuration after rebooting the router. That is already stored into NVRAM
  • Flash: This is similarl to hard-disk of a PC. It restores the image file of IOS software and any of the backup configurations that is saved every now and then. The configuration commands on the router are dependent on the command you issue. For instance, the command is "show running-configuration", RAM displays what is currently running When you type "show startup-configuration" NVRAM shows what configuration is stored to it.

your article is good. but can you please explain more every memory types and give more examples to better understand. thank you and GOD BLESS.

ROM (Read-Only Memory) - is an integrated circuit where data are burned during manufacturing. The data remains inside the chip even when power was cut off.

RAM (Random Access Memory) - is an integrated circuit where data are being stored temporarily. When the power was cut off every bi of data will be lost or erased.

NVRAM (Non-Volatile Random Access Memory) - is an integrated circuit with a function of an EEPROM. You can erased or reprogrammed the data inside the chip by means of an electrical signal.

Flash - is also a non volatile integrated circuit which you can electrically erased and reprogrammed the data inside the chip.
